Hi R&P, So what's the Placebo record of record and is it worth it?
Hi everybody.
I’ve been thinking about checking out a Placebo record. I’ve heard good things and as much as I got off on the wrong foot with them via the song that was on the opening credits of a movie from the 90s which name escapes me, but I somehow remember that Ryan Phillippe and the director got Reese Witherspoon drunk before pitching it to her to up the chances that she would do it… argh. I can even see the poster. It was really cheesey but a really fun movie at parts. Cruel Intentions.
Aah, anyways. So I recently heard their cover of Running Up That Hill and was pretty into it and I though maybe it’s time to give them a shot. What’s the Placebo record of note? Is it worth it to take a stab at getting into them (when you factor in that there is a whole world of music to buy)?

Thank you very much for any help.

BQ: Were those Stanford prison experiments messed up or what (watched a mini documentary on them last night)?
Hey Captain.
I know that was kind of a silly stamp to put on it, but I guess I was just saying that I could be talked out of it. I don’t know. I’ve been pretty tired lately.
Anyways. Thanks a lot for the link. I dug that. Very cool track. That could be the one.
Thanks man.

The thing about Placebo is that each of their albums has a certain flavor to it, really. That’s a good thing, except I find that I can’t get into all of their albums. So it really depends on what your taste is like. I personally started with their self-titled debut, which is a very rewarding listen if you’re into college rock and themes that related to the struggles of adolescence. It was released in the mid 90’s. Their other album I love is the more polished, produced, lyrically and musically complex Sleeping With Ghosts. Another great album. I haven’t really given their albums much of a chance, but do like a few tracks off Without You I’m Nothing and Black Market Music.

If you want to start off with individual songs, I recommend the following

If one Christians or a thousand Christians does something wrong does that reflect on all Christians and …?
…Christianity as a whole?

If a Christian is convicted of murder does that mean that I too am a bad Christian or guilt by association.
Very very few witches were burned at any stake. Mostly you had devout Christians people accused of witch craft. To say that all religous people agreed with those actions of the past is dishonest.

Even the majority of the so-called witches in the Salem Witch Trials were extremely devout Christians. What you would call crazy fundamentalist today.

Not that I can see.

Each is responsible for his/her own actions and not those of anyone else.

It gives people that idea. The actions of a few represent the whole in most situations.
itsnotme4321 | Dec 08, 2009

No, it just means that a Christian fell into a sin.

Jesus is sinless. Christians are not sinless.

Jesus is God, and Jesus loves you so very much! :D

The truth about Jesus is that the only way to be saved and to get into heaven and avoid being sent to eternal hell, is by believing in Jesus for salvation, believing in faith alone that Jesus, who is God, died on the cross for all our sins as FULL PAYMENT for all our sins, and then Jesus rose from the dead (1 Corinthians 15:1-4). Believe in Jesus alone for salvation, and you will be in heaven, no matter what! Salvation is a FREE GIFT that happens in a split second when you believe in Jesus alone to save you! It is impossible to lose or "leave" salvation (John 6:39-40, John 10:28, 1 John 5:13).

It does however show that the christian claim, often made here, that christians *as a whole* are "more moral" than other people is false. But most of us already knew that.

I am reading the subtext here relating to muslims and I am here to say different set of rules apply to muslims in the US. Americans are very good at ignoring hypocrisy. It’s what your country is founded on.

If the pope and his bishops order immoral/illegal acts such as the burning of witches, and the murder and torture of people who refuse to believe, and the people go along with it without speaking up, then it does reflect on all christians
FNA: The Next Generation | Dec 08, 2009

Think of it this way. It’s called terrible logic. Some terrorists are Muslims. All terrorists are bad. Therefore all Muslims must be bad.
PolandSprung | Dec 08, 2009

Of course not. This is the basic idiocy that so many people apply to Muslims.
Some Muslims hate the US, therefore ALL Muslims hate the US.

Some Catholic priests molested children therefore ALL Catholic priests do that.

Some Fundamentalist Christians bomb a Dr.’s office because he/she performs abortions, therefore ALL Fundamentalist Christians do so.

Ridiculous, but that is how people act when they refuse to use their brains.
vic91106 | Dec 08, 2009

Yes it does make us all look bad. Christian and atheist. Same as if a person from another group does something bad.
halfadozen1984 | Dec 08, 2009

Depends. If you react by defending them ( as some do in the case, for example, of those who have killed abortion providers) or by saying, "they are no true christian," it does implicate you as a whole, you are liars. . If you react by saying "our brother has sinned, and we must help him find his way home" then I can have a bit more sympathy. Your own religion tells you man is not perfect. Why do you insist that anyone who isn’t perfect is not a true christian?

If you want to be taken seriously as a moral voice in the world, denounce people like Pat Robertson, Hitler, and the rest of your brothers who fall into evil. Say that while you denounce them they are still your brothers in christ and attempt to mitigate the damage that their attempts to do evil in his name caused. Don’t become clowns by saying, oh, he isn’t really one of us.

The best way that christians can mitigate the effect of their evil brethren is by example.

Codex Theodosianus

The Codex Theodosianus was a compilation of the laws of the Roman Empire under the Christian emperors since 312. A commission was established by Theodosius II in 429[1] and the compilation was published in the eastern half of the Roman Empire in 438.[2] One year later, it was also introduced in the West by the emperor Valentinian III.

LAW BANNING ALL RELIGIONS OTHER THAN CHRISTIANITY

"It is Our will that all the peoples who are ruled by the administration of Our Clemency shall practice that religion which the divine Peter the Apostle transmitted to the Romans. According to the apostolic teaching and the doctrine of the Gospel, let us believe in the one deity of the father, Son and Holy Spirit, in equal majesty and in a holy Trinity. … The rest, whom We adjudge demented and insane, shall sustain the infamy of heretical dogmas, their meeting places shall not receive the name of churches, and they shall be smitten first by divine vengeance and secondly by the retribution of Our own initiative." — Codex Theodosianus, XVI.1.2.

THE BURNING OF NON-CHRISTIAN BOOKS

"All writings whatever which Porphyry or anyone else has written against the Christian religion, in the possession of whomsoever they shall be found, shall be committed to the fire." — Emperor Theodosius I.

Source: Lardner, Works, vol. vii., pp. 206, 396.

"Whenever there is found a meeting of a mob of Manichaeans, let the leaders be punished with a heavy fine and let those who attended be known as infamous and dishonored, and be shut out from association with men, and let the house and the dwellings where the profane doctrine was taught be seized by the officers of the city." — Codex Theodosianus, XVI.5.3.
After the English Reformation and establishment of the Church of England, from the 16th to the 19th century those guilty of such Nonconformity, termed "Recusants", were subject to civil penalties and sometimes, especially in the earlier part of that period, to criminal penalties. Roman Catholics formed a large proportion of Recusants, and were those to whom the term initially was applied. Non-Roman Catholic groups composed of Reformed Christians or Protestants who dissented from the Church of England were, later, also labelled "Recusants". The recusancy laws were in force from the reign of Elizabeth I to that of George III, though they were not always enforced with equal intensity.

Elizabethan England – Elizabethan Recusants and the Recusancy Laws
The Elizabethan Recusancy Laws directly effected all English Catholics. Elizabeth succeeded her Catholic sister Mary I on November 17 1558 and immediately re-established the Protestant Anglican Church. The Elizabethan Recusancy Laws were established due to the 1559 Act of Uniformity of Common Prayer and Administration of the Sacrament in which attendance at church became compulsory and non-attendance was punishable by fine or imprisonment. The Elizabethan religious settlement was passed by Parliament on 29 April 1559and the Elizabethan Prayer Book was first used June 24, 1559

Should we tell the children as we indoctrinate them into believe Adam and Eve had no belly button and women were made from a rib that one of the principle reasons this religon of love got off the ground was the threat of whipping death being lit on fire or being fined ?

Or should we continue to gloss over that part and concentrate more on how the entire new testament was written well after Jesus died ?

Celtic ? Saxon ?Scandinavian? Slavic ? Mediterranean ?European? An Angle? Or some poor slob who ran into a colonizing force when these laws were being enforced

You’re religion was made illegal your books burned your holy men imprisoned or killed

—- Non belief was punishable by various methods of extremity depending on who and when you happened to be born

—- You’re fore fathers if British — European or even some Southern American or African nations —- You’re forefathers either adopted Christianity or were killed whipped had their property taken or maybe just had to pay fines

The only reason this religion has been handed down to you — Is it was enforced by the sword the whip and the dungeon

You lost you’re heritage and the religion of your ancestors to the sword of conquest

And it was all happened in less than 300 yrs after Jesus died —

Or should we continue to ignore that ?

Yes or no?

Maybe not, the poor kids head’s are already filled with terrifying thoughts and images if they have been indoctrinated, we would have to take it really slowly.

Why should police officers get special treatment.?
I believe that Police officers are a necessary force. You’d be a fool to think otherwise. I do however think that they should have a heavy punishment for EVER abusing their power. An example should be set here, not paid leave!

Your thoughts –

Two off-duty Los Angeles Police Department officers have been arrested for allegedly pistol-whipping a man during a fight in Whittier, authorities said this morning.

One of the officers apparently got into an argument with his girlfriend about 8 p.m. Tuesday outside a Panera Bread restaurant in the 15600 block of Whittwood Lane, the Whittier Police Department said in a statement.

Witnesses told police the officer took issue with a bystander, who was watching the altercation while talking on his cellphone, and struck the man in the face. A fight ensued, during which one of the officers allegedly pulled out a handgun and began hitting the victim in the head, the statement said.

The victim was able to break free, but both off-duty officers chased after him and tackled him to the ground, where the assault continued, the statement said. The victim eventually escaped by running into a nearby Target store.

The victim was treated at the scene and taken to a hospital for further evaluation. The two officers were arrested for assault with a deadly weapon. They have been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation, LAPD officials said.

[Updated at 9:15 a.m.: The Whittier Police Department has identified the arrested officers as Brandon Valdez, 29, and Patrick Fitzgerald, 38.]
I look at someone who is able to pull out a pistol and beat someone in public with it AND get paid leave as special treatment! They should be behind bars like any normal person

I don’t think that they should get any special
